How It Works

Polar Bears

Sending a Message from your Mobile Phone

To send a text message to everyone in your swarm from you mobile phone, you must prefix the message with a command and the swarm name.

The commands available are:
.ASK               .CHAT            .TELL

.ask  means broadcast this message and send me back the replies.

.chat means broadcast this message and send all replies to everyone in the swarm.

.tell means broadcast this message and don't send me back any replies. (Replies will get posted to the messageboard).

So the syntax is
.command swarmname The message

Here are a few examples:

.tell mygang Party at John's house tomorrow night at 10pm

.ask soccer Who's available for training session today at 5pm

.chat KKC Need ideas for new charity event ... let's brainstorm

VERY IMPORTANT

Your mobile number used to send the message must be the mobile number held in My Account  in Swarm-it!

You must text the message to the Swarm-it! number.  The number is +447781482909.  We recommend you store this number in your mobile's address book under Swarm.

The total message including the command and the swarm name must not exceed 160 characters in length.

Receiving Messages on your Mobile Phone

When you receive a message it will look like this:

ASK: YourFriend (SwarmX Msg980) This is a test message

There are 5 parts to the message:

  • The type of message
    • TELL - replies will go to the messageboard only
    • ASK - replies will go to the message originator (in this example, only YourFriend will get replies)
    • CHAT - replies will go to everyone in the swarm
  • The person who sent the message - in this example, YourFriend
  • The swarm that it was sent to - in this example, everyone in the swarm called SwarmX will be sent this message.
  • An unique number to identify the message (this number will be shown on the messageboard and may be needed when you are replying) - in this example, 980.
  • And finally, the message itself - "This is a test message".
Replying to Messages from your Mobile Phone

To reply to the most recent message you received from Swarm-it! is just like replying to a normal to a text message.   Select reply, type your response and press Send. The system will route the reply to the correct person or the correct swarm.

However, if you want to reply to an older message, you must indicate the message number.  See green text for an example reply:
CHAT: Minty (ZZX Msg970) What's everyone doing this weekend?
Re970 Going to the movies on Saturday - anyone want to join me
